Palestinian Student Attacked in Vinnitsa, Ukraine

(August 4, 2008)

The following is an edited version of a posting on the UCSJ partner site coalitionagainsthate.org, posted by a local human rights activist.

On 19 July at night a 4th year student at the Vinnitsa medical university was walking to a dormitory for foreigners. But suddenly he was attacked by young man. According to other people, he had no time to protect himself. After losing consciousness, he was taken to a hospital and then to the neurosurgery department. The victim denies any possible contacts with the perpetrator or business reasons as a possible motive for the attack. He says he never saw him at the university. But it was not his 1st meeting with this guy. He noticed him before on Soborna street and while walking in Central Park. At that time, the perpetrator told him, "Go to your black quarter." But there were no violence during those meetings. This time the perpetrator arrived in an expensive car and immediately attacked him, shouting racist insults.

On 23 July there was police press-conference on this Vinnitsa beating. Police gave the following official version--the attack took place because of a girl, supposedly she was a girlfriend of the perpetrator (he is a 5th year student at a trade-economics university). Since the alleged attacker is the son of a rich businessman, the case may not proceed at all. UCSJ's Kiev monitor Vyacheslav Likhachyov added in his own report on the incident that the local police chief referred to the alleged culprit as "our guy" (as opposed to the foreign victim) and stated flat out that he did not believe that a crime had been committed.
