A young man that police detained yesterday in St. Petersburg, Russia died in police custody, according to a September 11, 2008 report by the local television station Vesti. Nitesh Kumar Singh was murdered in St. Petersburg by a group of masked assailants in 2006 in what appeared to be a racist attack. According to police, the suspect indicated he was willing to sign a confession after investigators interrogated him. He then ran towards the 4th floor window and jumped outside to his death.
Russian police routinely employ torture to extract confessions from suspects, and there have been other instances in which suspects jump out of windows to escape the pain.
