Man Who Tried to Provoke Race Riot Faces Trial

(September 25, 2008)

A court in Russia's far northern Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Region will soon preside over the trial of a local resident who tried to provoke a riot against non-Russian migrants, according to a September 24, 2008 report by the Rosbalt news agency. Dmitry Kurbanov faces charges of "calling for violence against citizens" related to an October 7, 2007 incident, when he and some unidentified friends allegedly tried to organize a race riot along the lines of the previous year's anti-migrant violence in Kondopoga. A large group of youths marched in the city that day calling for the expulsion of all migrants, but police stepped in before it could escalate into violence. The report does not mention whether or not other participants in the march face trial.
