Moscow Police Arrest Neo-Nazi for Market Bombing

(October 3, 2008)

Police in Moscow arrested an 18-year-old neo-Nazi in connection with the September 23 bombing of the Tushino Market, which injured five, according to September 30 and October 1 articles in the national daily "Moskovsky Komsomolets." Video cameras allegedly recorded the suspect and an as yet unidentified co-conspirator leaving a package that contained a homemade bomb at the "Na Brodvee" cafe. Police already had the suspect's name and photo on file after he was detained for participating in a racist attack in January 2008, but he gave them a false address, delaying efforts to catch him. It is not clear yet whether prosecutors will charge the suspect with membership in an extremist group, a hate crime, terrorism, or perhaps a lesser charge.
