For the second time in a month, a racist attack was reported in Riga, Latvia. According to a January 5, 2007 report by the Baltic News Service, on the evening of January 4, a group of neo-Nazis assaulted two Somalis inside an underground pedestrian passageway near the city’s central market. The extremists surrounded the Somalis and hit them several times before letting them go; passersby refused to get involved. According to a January 6, 2007 report by the local Russian language newspaper Chas the Somalis complained that police “for some reason laughed” when they reported the incident and gave them a phone number to call that nobody picked up. However, police did eventually start an investigation into the incident.
