Armenian Official Wants Emigration Restricted

(February 1, 2001)

According to a January 31, 2001 report by the Mediamax news agency, the chairman of the Armenian president's commission for human rights, Paruyr Ayrikian, has called for the government to clamp down on the number of emigrants leaving Armenia. Mr. Ayrikian claimed that every year about 50,000 emigrants give up their Armenian citizenship, and termed this a threat to the state. He also proposed allowing Armenians to have dual citizenship.

UCSJ has no information about Jews from Armenia having their emigration blocked, but such a statement by a government official is clearly a matter of concern.
