Moldovan Jewish Cemetery Vandalized

(March 5, 2003)

Eight tombstones were smashed in Jewish cemetery of Beltsy (Balti), Moldova, according to a February 14, 2003 report by the newspaper Nezavisimaya Moldova. The attack, which took place at the end of January 2003, marked the second time the cemetery has been vandalized in recent years. On August 22, 2000 three local youths were arrested for stripping valuable metal from tombstones there, but police did not press charges, claiming that “there was an absence of any kind of crime” in the teenagers’ actions. The head of the local Jewish community, Lev Bondar, is cited in the article as saying that the reason for the latest attack is the impunity vandals enjoy vis a vis the cemetery.
