Neo-Nazis Attack Tajiks in Moscow, Victims of Other Attacks Fear Asking Police for Help

(March 20, 2006)

Two youths have been arrested in Moscow in connection with an attack on Tajik migrant workers which took place earlier this week, according to a March 16, 2006 report by the Sova Information-Analytical Center. The youths allegedly shouted “Heil Hitler!” and “We will kill you!” as they beat the Tajiks before locking them in a basement and fleeing. A passerby responded to their cries for help, and set them free. One of the victims remains in the hospital unconscious, while the other helped police identify the attackers.

According to Sova, a similar attack took place on March 5, but the victims feared reporting it to police, as did the victims of several other attacks on Tajiks over the course of the last month. Migrant workers, many of whom are present in Russia illegally, generally avoid all contact with the police, who are often more interested in shaking them down for bribes than investigating crimes against them.
