Armenian Antisemite Gets Suspended Sentence

(March 22, 2005)

The head of the Armenian Aryan Order, Armen Avetisyan, was given a three year suspended sentence for violating hate speech laws, according to a March 18, 2005 report by the Regnum news agency. Mr. Avetisyan was charged with inciting hatred against Jews in numerous statements and publications, including calling for the expulsion of all Jews from Armenia. His statements embarrassed the government after the US State Department mentioned his statements in its Global Report on Antisemitism. Unfortunately, two members of the Armenian parliament publicly supported him, showing that his radical ideas have some political support.
