Five youths were detained in connection with the vandalism of a Jewish cemetery in Kishinev, Moldova, acccording to a March 28, 2007 report by the AEN news agency. The local Jewish community had retained the services of a non-profit Jewish security firm to guard the cemetery, which has been vandalized in the past, around the clock, but city authorities reportedly forced the firm out, arguing that it was the job of a municipal agency to look after the cemetery. However, the government agency is badly underfunded and only hired one guard, leaving the cemetery grounds, which encompasses around 24,000 graves, unprotected for long stretches. It is not clear if the Jewish community will be allowed to once again take steps to protect themselves in the wake of the latest incident.
