Antisemitic Literature Sold Openly in Riga

(April 3, 2008)

Despite a law banning the incitement of ethnic hatred, antisemitic literature is openly sold in a Riga, Latvia bookstore, according to an April 3, 2008 report by the Baltic News Service. "The Protocols of the Elders of Zion" and several other antisemitic works by Russian authors is available for purchase at the Pa Rokai bookstore on Krasta Street; the report did not mention if the books are available in both Russian and Latvian. A spokeswoman for Latvia's security police was quoted in the article as saying that since Latvia has no list of banned books, the only way to end the sale of such works would be to start a criminal investigation, solicit the testimony of "experts" to determine if they violate the law, and then convict the authors and/or vendors. The security police plan to explore this option, according to the spokeswoman.
