Around 100 hate crimes took place in Ukraine between 2007-2008, according to figures presented by the head of the country's security police, the SBU. An April 3, 2008 report on the web site Jewish.ru cited Nikolai Kalashnik contradicting statements last month by the police chief of Kiev, the minister of justice, and other officials who continue to minimize the problem of racist violence in Ukraine. Around 20% of these crimes were committed against the Jewish community, said Mr. Kalashnik at an April 2 roundtable. He announced that at the end of last year, the SBU formed a special unit to combat racist violence.
