Putin Sends Passover Greetings

(April 16, 2003)

MOSCOW, April 16 (Itar-Tass) -- President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday congratulated Russian Jews on Passover.

"I cordially congratulate Russian Jews on the festival of Passover! This holiday is devoted to the events that happened in ancient times - the liberation of Jews from Egyptian slavery. But the idea of freedom, having passed through centuries, once again inspires millions of people", the president said in his message.

"Out state, while considering human rights and freedoms as the ultimate value, considers the countering of xenophobia and extremism one of the most important tasks. I am confident that in order to fulfil it, it is necessary to develop cooperation between government bodies and all constructive forces in society", the document said.

Putin wished Russian Jews "happiness, peace and prosperity".
