Antisemitic Vandalism in Zhitomir

(April 17, 2008)

For the second time in two years, a cemetery memorial over the grave of a famous local rabbi was attacked by antisemitic vandals in Zhitomir, Ukraine, according to an April 17, 2008 report by the Russian Jewish web site Jewish.ru. Unknown individuals burned down the memorial over the grave of Rabbi Aaron on the night of April 15 and left antisemitic graffiti nearby. Police are investigating the incident, but local community leaders cited in the report are not optimistic, since several antisemitic crimes, including attacks on Jews, remain unsolved. In November 2007, vandals painted antisemitic graffiti on the grave memorial, but police refused to open an investigation, arguing that there was "an absence of a crime." Community leaders are planning a press conference to draw attention to this and other attacks.
