Another Neo-Nazi Attack on Belarusian Opposition?

(May 27, 2008)

Belarusian opposition members have for years accused the government of tolerating or even collaborating with neo-Nazis, who regularly attack them. A May 22, 2008 report on the opposition web site Khartiya 97 may be the latest such incident. Boris Khamayda, the editor of an opposition newspaper in Vitebsk, recently received written threats from members of the neo-Nazi group Russian National Unity (RNU). The letter made specific reference to his opposition activities. His brother Vyacheslav was then attacked by a man who came up to him and started beating him without saying a word. Last fall, the son of Vitebsk opposition member Yana Detzhavetseva was also attacked, again shortly after receiving a threatening letter from the RNU. After they complained about these threats to the police and the KGB, all they got in response was a letter stating that because the RNU is an unregistered organization, its members cannot be found.
