Police Arrest Suspects in Desecration of Kishinev Jewish Cemetery

(June 6, 2002)

Police have arrested two youths suspected of destroying almost 50 tombstones in a Kishinev, Moldova Jewish cemetery during Passover, according to a May 31, 2002 article in the newspaper Nezavisimaya Moldova. The author of the article admitted that he never thought that the vandals would be caught, “since the majority of earlier, similar violations of the law have remained unsolved.” Police claim that the youths were simple hooligans, not at all motivated by hatred of Jews.
