Lithuanian Court Annuls Fine for Antisemitic Publisher

(September 20, 2005)

Lithuania's Main Administrative Court annulled a lower court's July 2005 decision to fine the publisher of an antisemitic newspaper for inciting ethnic hatred, according to a September 16, 2005 report posted on the Russian Jewish web site Antisemitizmu.net.

Vitas Tomkus, publisher of “Respublika,” ran afoul of the law in the February 2004 edition of his newspaper with an article entitled “Who Rules The World?” which featured a crude antisemitic cartoon. This July a lower court found him guilty of incitement and fined him the equivalent of 1,000 euros.

The court's decision is not subject to appeal.
