Lithuanian MPs Want Charges Brought Against Antisemitic Politician

(October 3, 2001)

Ten members of the Lithuanian parliament have requested that the Prosecutor General's office bring charges against fellow MP Vytautas Sustauskas, known for his antisemitic rhetoric, according to the September 26, 2001 issue of Lietuvos Zinios. The MPs want Mr. Sustauskas impeached on the grounds that his public rhetoric incites violence and racial intolerance, which is illegal in Lithuania under Article 25, Part 4 of the Constitution. If convicted of these offenses, Mr. Sustauskas faces a possible jail term of three years. Mr. Sustauskas recently announced his intention to run for president.
