Lithuanian Jewish Leader Wants Charges Against Antisemitic Publisher Filed Again

(October 6, 2005)

The chairman of the Lithuanian Jewish community, Simonas Alperavicius, has publicly asked that charges of inciting ethnic hatred be re-filed against an antisemitic publisher, against whom charges were dropped in September, according to an October 3, 2005 report by the Baltic News Service. As UCSJ has previously reported, Lithuania's Main Administrative Court annulled a lower court's July 2005 decision to fine Vitas Tomkus, publisher of Respublika, for inciting ethnic hatred.

Mr. Tomkus ran afoul of the law in the February 2004 edition of his newspaper with an article entitled “Who Rules The World?” which featured a crude antisemitic cartoon.

The Main Administrative Court's decision is not subject to appeal. Nevertheless, the Jewish community leader sent a request to the prosecutor's office to re-file the charges, terming the court's decision “illegal.”
