Latvian Government Minister Wants Incitement Charges Pressed Against Newspaper Publisher

(October 21, 2004)

In the latest effort to bring incitement charges against the publisher of an antisemitic and anti-Russian newspaper, the Latvian parliamentary secretary of the Ministry of Public Integration Affairs, Aleksandr Brandas, has written to the Prosecutor General’s office, according to an October 19, 2004 report by the Regnum news agency. The subject of the letter is the "DDD" newspaper, which stands for "De-occupation, de-colonization, de-Bolshevization." Its publisher, Ayvar Garda, has made several statements inciting hatred against Russians and Jews over the past few years.

Mr. Brandas singled out for particular criticism articles in "DDD" calling for the deportation from Latvia of "kikes." Past efforts to halt Mr. Garda’s public incitement have all failed.
