Lithuanian Jewish Cemetery Vandalized

A Jewish cemetery in the western Lithuanian town of Plunge has been vandalized, according to a November 26, 2003 article in the leading Lithuanian national daily Lietuvos Rytas, summarized by UCSJ’s Baltic Bureau. Police discovered on November 24 that 14 gravestones had been damaged by unknown vandals. According to the article, this is not the first time such an attack has taken place. Part of the cemetery was built over in 1975 to accommodate a high school. Jews have been buried there since the 17th Century.
