Yad L'Yad: Helping Hands Across the Ocean |
This summer, Bob Spector of Congregation Beth Shalom -- Northbrook, IL, visited Tiraspol, Moldova, Yad L'Yad partner and witnessed first-hand the difficulties that face the Jewish people and particularly for the Yad L'Yad sponsored program, Meals-on-Wheels.
The following ad appeared in the December 1998 synagogue bulletin:
Can you imagine a Meals-on-Wheels program without wheels? Could you shop for 200 people without transportation? Could you take elderly patients and sick children for medical aid with no car? There is NOT EVEN ONE CAR among all of our Jewish families in Tiraspol. There is no public transportation.
"Why a car?" you ask. We wanted to get them a car to save them money and enable Chessed, the main Jewish organization in Tiraspol, to do their mammoth task of caring for 1,000 plus needy elderly and needy children. When we send them money for food and medicines, Anna, our contact person and head of Chessed, has to use a large chunk of that money to hire someone out of the Jewish community to drive her 80km to Kishniev to pick up the money, purchase medical supplies, and bring them back to Tiraspol. In the long run having a car will save money and make the job of caring for the needy more consistent. OVER 1,000 POOR AND SICK JEWISH PEOPLE RELY ON CHESSED FOR FOOD, MEDICINE, AND CLOTHING.
