Menorah Pulled Down in Vilnius, Holocaust Memorial Vandalized in Varena

Unidentified vandals pulled down a menorah in Vilnius during Hanukah, according to a December 18, 2004 report in the national daily "Lietuvos Rytas" summarized in English for UCSJ by its Baltic Bureau. Police are investigating the incident.

Meanwhile, a Holocaust memorial was vandalized near the city of Varena, Lithuania, according to a December 22, 2004 report by the Regnum news agency. The memorial marks a mass grave containing the bodies of an estimated 3,000 local Jews murdered by the Nazis. "Various symbols" were painted on the memorial and a nearby marble plaque. A criminal investigation has been started in relation to the incident.
