Racist Attack in Riga

(December 27, 2006)

A Brazilian woman was assaulted by racist youths in Riga, Latvia, according to a December 15, 2006 report in the local Russian language daily Telegraph. The young woman had just arrived in Riga and was being shown around by a local TV journalist. In an underground passageway, five youths approached the women and started to push them into a corner. They then threw a beer bottle at the Brazilian after telling her in English to “go home.” The bottle shattered on her face, causing cuts near her eyes. Passersby reportedly did nothing to stop the attack or even to call the police. However, the Latvian journalist did manage to contact the police on her own and soon afterwards, two youths were detained. Police reportedly apologized to the Brazilian woman, who left for London the next day.
