VISIT PART II of INTIMATE HISTORIES

INTRODUCTION: THE ART OF SAMUEL KAPLAN

The Union of Councils for Soviet Jews (UCSJ) is pleased to feature the paintings of Samuel Kaplan as its premier visual arts exhibit on UCSJ's FSU Jewish Culture Page. Mr. Kaplan, a native of Kiev, Ukraine, emigrated to the United States in 1991, and currently resides in Brooklyn, NY. UCSJ has followed Mr. Kaplan's career since first attending an exhibition of his works in Moscow in 1989, and joined in efforts to assist him obtaining permanent resident status in the United States.

The paintings included in this show were all created since Mr. Kaplan's arrival in the United States - what he describes as "works that now belong to US culture." The current exhibit focuses on intimate depictions of life in Brooklyn, including paintings of relatives and the artist himself. The previous exhibit presented Kaplan's paintings of Russian-Jewish history and life including several on the subject of emigration from the Soviet Union.

We hope that you enjoy the show. Please feel free to send comments to: ucsj@ucsj.com.
